Percy announced at dinner that he's moving out of the Burrow. He's found a flat in New London. With a roommate. He's really quite excited about it, says the flat is quite lovely.

Well. I must admit, I didn't expect--well.

Children must grow up, after all. They must, or Arthur and I aren't doing our job properly. Still, I must admit this particular announcement caught me quite by surprise.

I--I suppose I'll have to see if I can round up some extra sauce pans and linens to help stock his new home.

Had he not talked about moving out before, Molly?

At least he's sensible enough to go in with a flatmate to save his Galleons.

And aren't you and Arthur always saying how much you worry about him seeing something that could land you in a hot cauldron?

This way you can have him over for Sunday suppers and continue to gently counteract whatever nonsense Malfoy's shovelling into him.

He was pretty private about flat-hunting in front of Mum and Dad, but I knew he was looking.

I suspect that Mum's problem is partly his flat-mate.

Why, who's his flat-mate? Wood? Stretton?

Not that Baddock or any of the other Death Eaters' sons?

And there's your problem.

The young lady.

Mum, I thought you liked Penny.

They do seem to get along quite well. I don't have as much of a problem with the two of them moving in together as Molly does.

But I will admit that while they seem content together for now, I almost wish that Percy might choose someone differently if he's thinking of settling down permanently.

I admit I haven't been paying much attention to Percy's love life, but he's been 'seeing' Penny Clearwater for a couple of years now, hasn't he? Does your mother really imagine they've remained completely chaste before this?

(Not that it's impossible. Just...unlikely?)

Because...well, it's subtle.

Somehow, I think they manage to bring out in each other some of their worst personal tendencies.

Well, no. To be fair, I really can't say that for sure about Penny; I don't know her as well, of course. But Percy, now: I overheard a snatch of something he was saying to her once about 'when they get their own mudblood.'

Look, I don't know how it worked in your family, but here's how it works in mine: I don't directly inquire about my Mum and Dad's sex life, and they don't inquire about mine.

That leaves Mum free to imagine that I'm chaste as a monk, I suppose. (As a matter of fact, I am as chaste as a monk, annoyingly. But I have more than a hunch that Percy isn't.)

It was partly that I didn't mean to be eavesdropping, and I didn't particularly want him to know I had overheard him. It was partly that I was so shocked. You know we've never allowed that word in our house.

But Percy's an adult now, and if he's intentionally choosing to use it, that means it's more of a risk for your Mum and I if we make it clear we're challenging that point of view.

Now to be fair, Molly, we have to admit that we saw signs and glimpses of these types of attitudes before he ever went to work for Malfoy.

My family's not the best example, Bill. Circe knows I still get the shudders thinking about my own parents' intimacy, so I understand your perspective perfectly!

Though I was, as it happened, absolutely and depressingly unattached all through school. And much more chaste than either of my parents assumed, at that - right up until the summer after I moved out on my own. Not the education I'd recommend for a young man, but in those days it was the fashion to, er, indulge in all sorts of amusements in Muggle London.

But I can understand that it's awkward, even in a normal family like yours, when the kids are old enough to be starting their own households.

I suppose it just never occurred to me that anyone his age, with a steady girlfriend for that long, wouldn't have taken advantage of the opportunity.

And let's face it: Your mum's not a prude, exactly. Nor is she an idiot.

But I'll give you that she can be willingly blind, if she wants to be.

And as for your own situation ... Bill, you ought to come round more on Friday and Saturday nights.

Can't guarantee you'll meet anyone interesting but at least you shan't be lonely, either.

It's a sign of how much ground we've lost, Molly. Round the shop, it's all too frequently used and not even as a particularly derogatory term.

Which is in itself blood-curdling, and that's the grim truth, to coin the phrase.

Mum wants us to get legally hitched. And to give her grandbabies. In that order, as she puts it. I will say that I'm grateful she isn't nagging me, trying to set me up with anyone or anything. But that's her expectation. She'll bite her lip hard about Percy in the end, I think, even though he's not following her preferred agenda.

But we'll all be able to see the teethmarks.
